The 6th Sussex Challenge Cup was held on the 1st October 2022, one player missed out and as there was no reserve on site we went ahead with 31 players, Marco benefitting from Ian Anderson giving him a bye into the 2nd round.Never the less it was Stuart Rogers who won his first tournament beating Stefan Paliwoda in the final while Tim and Anna Price settled for 3rd and 4th place this time.

 

In the Consolation Bob Young again triumphed after his 2017 win and improved on his runner up trophy from last year beating Nils into 2nd place this year.

Mike Grabsky took the Last Chance final but all credit to Kitty Carruthers who beat some high ranking opponents and also took the best performance for a under 1500 rated player and is local to the Chichester area.

In the 1 point knockout final Rosalie Johnson reclaimed her title from 2019 preventing Marco Bellini from going one better than last year but was pleased to be going home with some money and prizes.

Many thanks to all the players who came along and enjoyed the sunshine and buffet lunch supplied by my brother and Claire at the Boulevard again this year as the Waverley couldn’t supply any food due to trouble getting a chef, everyone was complementry and did their best to finish the generous offerings.

Glad to say the 5th Sussex Challenge Cup was played out on a lovely sunny day and some people enjoyed basking with the sea views here at the Waverley and we managed to complete all the matches without any major mishaps. One of our Bognor regulars Crispin Duke made it to the final of the main but fell at the final hurdle as Gary Brooker won 9-8 to claim the title for his own.

The consolation was fought out between John Broomfield and Annie Craig again going down to the last match with John repeating his showing of 2019 and coming away as the winner again.

In the last chance last minute substitute Bob Young made the most of entry getting to the final but found Kevin Bailey in unstoppable form and claim his first Sussex Challonge Cup trophy of an engraved pint glass leaving Bob with the runner up trophy this time.

In the 1 point knockout Annie Craig got the better of Marco Bellini to claim her 2nd trophy of the weekend and make her trip down to the South Coast a profitable day for her and partner Roni who won a share of the £20 pool in the consolation section.

Thanks to all the players who turned out and my brother who did the catering with Claire from the Boulevard which was enjoyed by everyone and helped make it a very enjoyable day and look forward to holding it again next year on the 1st of October 2022.

 

The 5th Sussex Challenge Cup went ahead as a live event again this year on the 9th of October it was with 32 players as it gave players more room to have a table for each match rather than pushing for an extra 16 players as I was hoping to have last year before it was cancelled and made an online event.

Saturday, Play will start at 11 am (registration for entering the side pools will be open from 10 am on the 9th of October 21 and thank you for your support in the past 5 years which has encouraged me to try and hold this as a live tournament again.

 

Total prizes returned will be £1120 if we have the full 32 players entered. There will also be some trophy glasses and drinks for the winners and runners up including Champagne, Prosecco, wine and beer.

The 4th Sussex Challenge Cup went ahead on Saturday 7th of November as an online event of course but we had the full 32 players taking part and the winner of the 4th Sussex Challenge Cup for 2020 was Richard Halvorson beating last years winner Ergin Ahmet. The finalist of the Consolation were Michael Ireland and Alex Polden with Michael claiming top spot, another first time player in the Susex Cup. Making it a clean sweep of players making a first appearence was Plamen Sivrev who won the Last Chance beating Kevin Jones.

Main Double elimination in as far as the losers are in effect a progressive consolation so the winner of Main wins the tournament, the winner of the loser bracket will be the winner of the consolation without having to play the loser of the final who will be Runner up of the main.

Play will start at 11 am on 07/11/20 Saturday morning, the draw will be done on Challenge and the names transferred to the draw sheet in heroes. The matches will be 7 point in the main, (the final can be 9 or 11 point if agreed by finalist) 5 point in the consolation and 3 point in the Last Chance.

Entry £20 (registration £5) returned 100% will be divided as below if there is a full complement of 32 players, if there are less than 32 players prizes will be scaled down according to the pot.

Of the people who have a preference on clock times most have suggested the WBIF settings of 1 minute Bank and 8 seconds delay so I will have to go with this as no other suggestions have come for the slower times

 

The 4th Sussex Challenge has been cancelled but we are holding an online tournament this year as stated above.

The 4th Sussex Challenge Cup will on Saturday 24th of October 2020 play will start at 11am with the desk open from 10 am to pay into any pools you wish to join, let me know if you wanted to pay into any pools before the day. .

I hope the 2020 Sussex Challenge Cup will be bigger and better then the last 3 years which have been very successful thanks to you the players turning up to play each year. So I am going to do a Masters flight which will be £50 entry plus £25 registration to cover the venue, your buffet lunch and the prizes which will be similar to the previous years in engraved glasses and bottles of booze. I will also do an advance section for players graded under 1600 in the http://results.ukbgf.com/ratings.

The Advance flight will be £30 entry and £20 registration and will be limited to a maximum of 16 players who will be playing for a main tournament and their own Consolation tournament but will be able to play in the main Last Chance and there will be a 1 point knockout available when you are out of all the other elements.

I  have added a link below for entry to either section and will post more when I have worked out all the details and look forward to seeing many of you who have supported this event in the last 3 years.

The Masters will be clock preference so anyone wishing to use a clock may and the result will stand if your time expires the Advance elements will not be clock preference as this should be where the less experienced players are able to play more casually.

There will be a limit of 32 players in the Masters and if full like the last 3 years the first prize should be £500 with the other amounts yet to finalised but al the entry fees will be returned in the prize fund and the link to enter is below.

If there are 16 players in the advance section everyone plays 5 point matches in the first round, in the second round the winners play each other in 5 point matches which produces 4 players on 2/2 who are in to the last 16. The 8 losers playing in the second round produces 4 players on 0/2 who go into the Consolation and the 8 players on 1/2 play in a 3^rd round which the winners join the 4 qualifiers in the main and 4 losers join the consolation players in a straight knockout format either to the final or drop into the Main Masters Last Chance Element and finally the 1 point knockout element.

Ergin with the champagne, glass and over £400 with Anna who made up the all Cypriot final.

John Broomfield beats local Crispin Duke in the Consolation final, John was runner up in the main event 2 years ago while Crispin was runner up in the last chance 2 years ago so both have twice been in the money at Bognor.

Sean Clennell over came Mike Grabsky from Brighton in a late finish for the Last Chance.

In the 1 point knockout Rosalie Johnson beat our own Mukesh making his first final and much improved since learning the game less than 2 years ago at our Laburnham Club when I was teaching there.
